Hello Fellow Pet Owners!

I thought I would share some fun and interesting facts with you today. Some of these facts come directly from the fabulous owners of the dogs I walk each day, others were heard or read on the television, magazine or internet. I hope you find them as interesting as I did.

The first one, I know, is not appropriate for all audiences but I thought I would share this because I encounter it each and every day on my walks. Dogs prefer to poop in alignment with the earth’s magnetic field, north or south. If the field is unclear, they’ll poop any old way. No Comment!

The Washington DC area, which includes parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia, has more than 20 dog parks. Don’t you wish we could say that about our town? I know we could all benefit.

There is a growing movement among dogs in poor health to provide pot to ease their pain and suffering. Veterinarian Doug Kramer of Los Angeles spearheaded the medical marijuana movement for dogs after watching his dog benefit from the treatment. I wouldn’t advice this method on your own, but it is worth a discussion with your own veterinarian. It is so interesting that animal medications often mirror the same medications that we are prescribed.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 83 percent of family dogs in the United States are spayed or neutered. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that number increased so that many dogs would not end up being left abandoned?

According to author Mark Derr, researchers in China have found evidence that some hunters raised millet to feed to their hunting dogs, even in times when meat was scarce and they needed the grain for themselves. It appears that hunters were very logical in determining that dogs required a healthy diet in order to thrive. Today, we are also learning of differing diets that go a long way in benefiting our dogs health.
